Trends in Genealogy

Just as the transportation methods have changed since the early days of the Cumberland Valley, the face of family history has changed. Advances in the science of genetics bring us new avenues of discovery. No longer is genealogy limited to those who can afford the time and money to travel to archives. The internet means that the hobby is opened to anyone who has access to a computer. More records are being digitized each day and can be found on-line. New tools make it easier to document our research. Digital storage can help us preserve our findings. With word processing and graphic software, we can produce beautiful family history products for future generations to enjoy.

At our Trends in Genealogy Focus Area, you can ask “how to” questions about using the newest technology to aid in your family research, discover techniques for preserving documents and photos, and hear favorite tips and tricks of professional genealogists and fellow participants. Newcomers to genealogy can receive guidance on “Getting Started.”

Conference attendees are encouraged to bring samples of their work products to show others.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Taking advantage of Digitized Records
  • Using Ancestry.com and other on-line services
  • Making the most of new devices such as smart phones, tablets, and portable scanners
  • Using Global Positioning Systems
  • Capturing your relatives on audio and video
  • Presenting your story
  • Protecting and preserving your priceless family photos
