FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We are very pleased that you will be attending the Cumberland Pathways Family History and Genealogy Conference, Oct. 20-22.   The Cumberland County Historical Society, the Army Heritage Center Foundation, Dickinson College, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Cumberland Valley Visitor’s Bureau have joined together to offer you an unique weekend devoted to family history.  This message is intended to answer some of the frequently asked questions about Cumberland Pathways.

EARLY REGISTRATION

The Cumberland County Historical Society (CCHS) at 21 North Pitt Street in Carlisle will open its doors to Cumberland Pathways participants Friday afternoon between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.  You can pick up your conference registration materials at this time if you wish.  Research fees will be waived that afternoon and conference participants can research their own family story in the Hamilton Library.  It will also be a chance to explore downtown Carlisle.  With your nametag, you can receive discounts at History on High and Whistlestop Bookshop on Friday afternoon and Saturday.

PHILADELPHIA TOUR

Two vans will leave the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, located at 1300 Locust Street Philadelphia, at 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.  The pre-paid passengers will receive registration material upon arriving at the Comfort Suites Hotel in Carlisle. The vans will leave Carlisle to return to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon after the Brunch and the Church Record discussion. The Comfort Suites Hotel in Carlisle address is 10 South Hanover Street Carlisle, PA 17013. The phone number is 717-960-1000.

OPENING RECEPTION

Cumberland Pathways officially begins with Friday night’s opening reception at 6:00 p.m. at the Cumberland County Historical Society at 21 North Pitt Street in Carlisle.  You will be able to pick up your conference nametags and tote bags if you have not previously done so.  It should be a fun evening catered by the 1794 restaurant with music provided by a popular local band.  You can see two new exhibits and meet conference presenters and your fellow attendees.

 

PLENARY SESSION

The Plenary session will start Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in the large social hall at Dickinson College’s Holland Union Building.  The HUB is located at 28 North College Street. Complementary coffee, tea and water will be available.  Michele Ridge, the former First Lady of Pennsylvania, will welcome you to the Cumberland Valley.   You will be introduced to the history of this great valley and why it has been a pathway for so many Americans for over three hundred years.  They left clues to their lives behind in our unique archives and repositories.  Still in the Hub and immediately following the Plenary Session, you can hear about the treasures in some of these archives.

OPTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ON SATURDAY

After the plenary session, Cumberland Pathways provides optional opportunities for all.  You can choose to listen to formal presentations by leaders from the genealogy, archival, military, and academic communities, learn interviewing techniques from oral historians, or have individual personal consultations with experts.  These sessions will be held at Dickinson College, the Cumberland County Historical Society (CCHS), and the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHCEC.)  Click here for a chart that lists all the possibilities with their scheduled times and locations.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS AND DINNER

The Saturday evening dinner will be held at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center at 950 Soldiers Drive in Carlisle.  The dinner will begin at 6:45 p.m.  It will be preceded by social time with a cash bar that opens at 6:00 p.m.   After dinner, CeCe Moore will offer her keynote address:  “The Power of DNA to Unravel Family Mysteries.”

TOUR OF USAHEC

Those who have signed up for the special behind the scenes tour of the USAHEC facilities should gather at USAHEC at their information desk at 5:30 p.m.  You must be pre-registered for this tour as it is limited to only fifty people.

SUNDAY BRUNCH AND CHURCH RECORD DISCUSSION

The Sunday brunch will be held at the Comfort Suites Hotel.  It will be served buffet style and will begin at 11:45 a.m.  The brunch fee is not included in the basic conference fee.  The church record discussion will follow.

Silent Auction

The Bradley photograph silent auction will open during Friday night’s reception at the Historical Society and close at U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center promptly at 6:30pm. The silent auction winners will be announced Saturday evening after the Keynote address.

Vendors

Vendors can begin set up at the Cumberland County Historical Society on Friday starting at 10am in the Society’s History Lounge. Electricity is available. Vendors are encouraged to bring their own 6-foot tables, though the Society’s does have a limited number available for use. The Society will provide chairs for vendors.

PARKING

It is not necessary to feed the parking meters on Saturday in downtown Carlisle although on Friday afternoon you will receive a $15.00 fine if you are parked illegally.  The meters do not need fed after 4 PM on Friday.  Watch for signs about additional free parking opportunities in downtown Carlisle for Cumberland Pathways attendees.  There is ample free parking at USAHEC. The Cumberland County Historical Society also has limited free parking available in the parking lots behind 21 N. Pitt Street off Dickinson Avenue.

SHUTTLE SERVICE

Dickinson College, Cumberland County Historical Society & Comfort Suites are within walking distance of each other.  The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center is located at 950 Soldiers Drive, Carlisle, approximately two and a half miles from the Dickinson College campus.  For your convenience, Cumberland Pathways will be operating a shuttle service between these sites during the day on Saturday.  It will leave Dickinson College every half hour, starting at the close of the Plenary Session at 10:00 a.m., stop at CCHS, and then continue to USAHEC. The last shuttle route will run at 5pm Saturday. Please note, only participants from the Philadelphia bus trip will receive shuttle service after CeCe’ s keynote back to their hotel.
